What happens at your first appointment

Each follow-up session is structured around where you are in your recovery. No two appointments are identical because no two patients progress in exactly the same way.

Progress review: Your physiotherapist starts by checking in on how you have been since your last session. Has the problem improved, stayed the same, or changed? How have you been getting on with any exercises or advice from the previous appointment? This informs exactly what the session focuses on.

Hands-on treatment: Depending on your condition and how you are progressing, your session may include manual therapy (joint mobilisation, manipulation, or soft-tissue work), exercise therapy, electrotherapy, or acupuncture. Your physiotherapist will explain what they are doing and why at each stage.

Adjusting your plan: If your progress is ahead of or behind where it was expected to be, your treatment plan is updated accordingly. This keeps your therapy matched to your actual recovery rather than a fixed schedule.

Exercise and self-management: Most patients will have exercises or self-management strategies to follow between appointments. Your physiotherapist will progress these as your strength and movement improve.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of follow-up appointments that will be helpful depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and your recovery goals. After your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will give you a clear indication of what to expect for your specific situation.

As a general guide:

  • Acute soft-tissue injuries often respond well within four to six sessions

  • More complex or long-standing conditions may require a longer course of treatment

  • Surgical rehabilitation is usually structured as a programme over several months

You will never be recommended appointments you do not need. Your physiotherapist will be honest with you about progress throughout.

Questions patients ask

Do I have to be an existing patient to book a follow-up?

Follow-up appointments are for patients who have already had an initial consultation at Harris Physiotherapy. If you are new to the clinic, please book an initial consultation first so we can carry out a proper assessment before treatment begins.

Can I book follow-up appointments with a different physiotherapist?

We will do our best to keep you with the same physiotherapist throughout your treatment for continuity of care. If you have any preferences or concerns, please let us know when booking.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Your physiotherapist will tell you if anything specific is needed.

How will I know when I no longer need treatment?

Your physiotherapist will be open with you about your progress throughout. When your recovery goals have been met and you have the tools to manage independently, your treatment plan will be complete. We will also advise you on any longer-term maintenance or prevention strategies relevant to your condition.
