Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Programmes

Rehabilitation is the structured process of restoring movement, strength, and function after injury, surgery, or a period of reduced activity. At Harris Physiotherapy, rehabilitation programmes are individually designed based on a full clinical assessment and your specific goals.
We work with patients who are:
-
Recovering from orthopaedic surgery (hip or knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, and similar procedures)
-
Returning to sport after a musculoskeletal injury
-
Managing long-term or chronic musculoskeletal conditions
-
Rebuilding after a period of immobilisation, such as time in a cast or following a fracture
-
Working through a condition that involves progressive deconditioning, such as prolonged back pain or hip impingement
What does a rehabilitation programme involve?
Your programme begins with an initial consultation. Your physiotherapist takes a full history, assesses your current function, and agrees a set of realistic goals with you. From there, a structured plan is built around those goals.
A rehabilitation programme at Harris Physiotherapy typically includes:
-
Exercise-based rehabilitation — targeted strength, mobility, and stability work specific to your condition and goals. Exercises are progressed at each session as your capacity improves.
-
Manual therapy — hands-on treatment to reduce pain, improve joint movement, and address soft-tissue restriction that is limiting progress.
-
Education and load management — clear guidance on what to do between sessions, what to avoid, and how to manage your activity levels safely.
-
Return to activity planning — for patients with a specific target (return to sport, return to work, a post-surgical milestone), the programme is structured around that outcome.
The number of sessions varies by condition. After your initial assessment your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate. Most patients working through a sports injury or post-surgical recovery attend three to twelve sessions, though complex or long-standing conditions may require more.
Physiotherapy-Led Acupuncture and Dry Needling
Physiotherapy-led acupuncture is a clinical technique used within a physiotherapy treatment plan. It is not the same as traditional Chinese acupuncture. At Harris Physiotherapy, acupuncture is applied by HCPC registered Chartered Physiotherapists who use it as one tool within a broader clinical approach to pain management and rehabilitation.
We use two closely related techniques:
-
Acupuncture — fine needles are inserted at specific anatomical points to modulate pain signals, reduce muscle tone, and support tissue healing.
-
Dry needling — a more localised technique, targeting myofascial trigger points (tight knots in muscle tissue) to reduce pain and restore movement. Dry needling uses the same needles as acupuncture but applies them to specific points of restriction rather than traditional meridian sites.
Both techniques are used alongside other physiotherapy treatments. They are not offered as standalone sessions at Harris Physiotherapy.
What conditions is physiotherapy acupuncture used for?
Physiotherapy-led acupuncture and dry needling are most commonly used as part of a treatment plan for:
-
Persistent neck or back pain
-
Shoulder pain, including rotator cuff conditions and frozen shoulder
-
Knee pain, including patellofemoral conditions and tendinopathies
-
Hip pain and gluteal tendinopathies
-
Headaches associated with neck dysfunction
-
Sports injuries involving soft-tissue restriction or prolonged muscle tension
-
Chronic musculoskeletal pain that has been resistant to other approaches
Acupuncture is not appropriate for all patients. Your physiotherapist will assess whether it is a suitable component of your treatment plan at your initial consultation.
How is physiotherapy acupuncture different from traditional acupuncture?
This is a question we hear regularly. Traditional acupuncture is rooted in the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and is delivered by acupuncturists who are trained in that system. Physiotherapy-led acupuncture is different in three key ways:
-
It is delivered by a regulated healthcare professional. HCPC registration is a statutory requirement. An HCPC-registered physiotherapist is accountable to the same professional body as a doctor or nurse, and is subject to fitness-to-practise oversight.
-
It is used within a physiotherapy framework. Acupuncture at Harris Physiotherapy is one component of a clinical assessment and treatment plan, not a standalone treatment delivered according to traditional principles.
-
The rationale is anatomical and neurophysiological. The decision about where to needle is based on anatomy, pain physiology, and the clinical picture, not on traditional meridian theory.
-
If you are specifically looking for traditional Chinese acupuncture, we would suggest seeking a registered acupuncturist. If you are looking for evidence-informed pain management or rehabilitation that includes needling as a clinical tool, physiotherapy-led acupuncture is likely the right choice.

Questions patients ask
Do I need a GP referral for rehabilitation physiotherapy?
No. You can refer yourself directly to Harris Physiotherapy for a rehabilitation assessment. Self-referral is straightforward: book an initial consultation online, by phone, or by email. Your physiotherapist will assess your situation fully at that appointment and agree a rehabilitation plan with you.
How long does physiotherapy rehabilitation take?
This depends on the condition, how long you have had it, your goals, and how your body responds to treatment. After your initial assessment your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate based on what they find. Most patients with a sports injury or post-surgical condition attend six to twelve sessions over four to eight weeks. More complex or long-standing conditions may require a longer programme.
Is physiotherapy-led acupuncture the same as traditional acupuncture?
No. Physiotherapy-led acupuncture is delivered by HCPC registered Chartered Physiotherapists as part of a clinical treatment plan. It uses the same fine needles but applies them according to anatomical and neurophysiological principles rather than traditional Chinese meridian theory. It is used alongside other physiotherapy treatments, not as a standalone therapy.
Can physiotherapy acupuncture help with chronic pain?
Yes, it is used for this regularly. For persistent pain that has not responded to other approaches, acupuncture and dry needling can be effective components of a broader physiotherapy treatment plan. Your physiotherapist will assess whether it is appropriate for your specific situation at your initial consultation.
I had surgery six months ago. Is it too late to start rehabilitation?
It is not too late. While early rehabilitation after surgery typically produces better outcomes, meaningful functional improvement is achievable at any stage. A clinical assessment will establish where you are now, what the barriers to progress are, and what a realistic rehabilitation programme can achieve for you.
